Sunset Beach Movie Review

It still lives whether it is Sunset Beach, CA or Ludlow, KS

I remember I checked out the first episode of the show, I thought it was different (film, not tape) and I remember I wasn’t impressed till I heard that Eddie Cibrian (one of my favorite actors) joined the show and I said maybe I check out the show and after that I got hooked. I was hoping somewhere NBC would keep the show on as of today but they cancelled it and I kind of figured that once Eddie was leaving to do "Third Watch" I said to myself goodbye Sunset. But it had some hilarious stories to watch and I love the cast. It was different for the 90s as well as up to date stuff like cyber romance, Annie’s craziest fantasies, (which I am glad that NBC never cut the scene out that Annie fantasized that Sean and Caitlin walked on their mother in bed with Rose, the maid) and kudos to the crew for putting that structure of that story together and sticking by it when they knew they were going off the air. I miss the show, but thank God for VCRs which I taped most of the episodes. So I could say I still live back in Sunset Beach. Just wish they were newer episodes, that someday Aaron Spelling would do a miniseries of the show and show us what these characters are doing. I also had the laugh when Meg finally married Ben and she fell asleep and dreamed she was in Ludlow after all these years with the existing cast there. I want the show back.

Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment Movie Review

This is a sequel to a Comedy classic that holds up

Police Academy 2 is a cinematic masterpiece. I was really surprised on how the cast came together to make a very good film. Howard Hessman AKA Dr. Johnny Fever from WKRP in Cininnnati, makes his only appearance in the series as Lasards brother. There chemistry on screen is unmatched and its a shame that they never teamed up again. Tim Kazerinsky plays the role of Sweetchuck, a very complicated man with many unfulfilled dreams. Bobcat Goldwait also makes his first appearance in the film. This film feels good from start to finish.Steve Guttenburg remains in top form as does Bubba Smith, and the late David Graf round out a talented cast.

When a misguided delivery driver inadvertently delivers a package containing concealed bricks of cocaine to the wrong address, it sets in motion a desperate search and battle for the coke between the furious dealer that sent it, the fearful intended recipients that missed it, and the conniving accidental recipients that plan to flip it. Time is running out and everyone’s trying to get their hands on the package that’s been sent…Next Day Air!

Next Day Air Movie Review

Express delivery

Being addicted to the doobie may not be the best character trait when working for a courier service. Leo (Donald Faison) seems unperturbed, given his mother is the person who hired him. On another typical high Leo mistakenly delivers a package full of heroine to a bunch of slightly retarded wannabee gangsta / bank robbas / criminimal masterminds Brody (Mike Epps) and Guch (Wood Harris). This quickly causes a series of events which lead to the opening scene of the movies: Leo being surrounded by people with guns and a low tolerance for ineptitude.

"Next Day Air" closely follows in the footsteps set out by movies such as "Snatch" or "51st State", although this time around it takes place entirely in the States with 80% of the movie occurring in two rooms. As can be expected it is a mix of unabated comedy with brutal gangsters, fast talking criminals and crazy sequence of events ending with a grand showdown finale to tie all the separate plots and characters together.

Based on a very rudimentary plot the movie aims at delivering the package with the minimum necessary runtime. At just 84 minutes and no less than 9 main characters being involved there is no place for their development, background or emotional involvement. Instead we get a fast paced movie (which somehow manages to find time to have pointless detours into non-funny side scene attractions) with a lack of purpose. None of the character are able to catch your attention and involve you in the story, although Omari Hardwick (playing a drug dealer wanting out of business) does his sincerest best to bridge the script shortcomings.

A sorely empty package filled with fluff, but at least the delivery is express so at least you won't waste a lot of time waiting for it to be over and done with.

The Spy Who Came in from the Cold Movie Review

Best spy movie of the 1960s

So many poor Cold War spy movies were made in the 1960s, ranging from shtick to schlock. This one is a standout — great acting, great atmosphere, great plot. It’s darker, grittier, and more realistic than any other films of this genre from the mid-60s, and wears even better with age (no "mind control machines" or other ridiculous retro gadgets).

Le Carré is often credited for making the spy novel transcend genre fiction and enter into the realm of literature. It is apt that a similar statement can be said about a movie based on Le Carré; it moves beyond "spy movie" into brilliant cinema. Heavily recommended.

Split Second Movie Review

A well done action/horror film.

Split Second was a blast to watch. This movie has all the great elements of action and horror, with a bit of the absurd to border on a cult film. Rutger Hauer is very good in this kind of film. The film is tight and there aren’t alot of wasted frames. I enjoyed the characteristics of Hauer’s Stone character. Watching Rutger Hauer take on a monster and scarf down some chocolate donuts was very cool. The monster itself was a very imaginitive creation and I liked that it attacked so quickly. Split Second is a great film for a rainy day or a late night feature.

As the Allied forces approach Paris in August 1944, German Colonel Von Waldheim is desperate to take all of France’s greatest paintings to Germany. He manages to secure a train to transport the valuable art works even as the chaos of retreat descends upon them. The French resistance however wants to stop them from stealing their national treasures but have received orders from London that they are not to be destroyed. The station master, Labiche, is tasked with scheduling the train and making it all happen smoothly but he is also part of a dwindling group of resistance fighters tasked with preventing the theft. He and others stage an elaborate ruse to keep the train from ever leaving French territory.

The Train Movie Review

Nail-Biting Frankenheimer Masterpiece

Absolutely riveting thriller, an American-French co-production, with a great cast, well-written plot and script – and great stuntwork. As with all of John Frankenheimer’s work, it’s an instantly classic masterpiece.

Burt Lancaster is Labiche, a French station manager who becomes entangled in efforts to prevent German Colonel Von Waldheim (Scofield) from shipping hundreds of classic pieces of artwork out of Paris before the Allies re-take the city.

John Frankenheimer has done an excellent job putting every aspect of great storytelling together. The most essential part is the characters. Lancaster is absolutely great as Labiche. While the French want him to simply delay the train, Labiche is always more concerned about the human cost. Eventually, so many men are killed in the attempt to delay the train that he takes it upon himself to save the artwork so they did not die in vain. On the opposite side, Scofield makes a very believable, maniacal officer. He is purely obsessed by art. He’s not your typical Hollywood "Nazi" officer; here, his one goal is not eradication of the Jews or whatnot – it’s to steal millions of dollars worth of paintings for personal gain.

The French are played, for the most part, by young native French actors. Michel Simon plays a grizzled old engineer who tries to take matters into his own hands, at first, when Labiche won’t aide the cause. Albert Remy (IS PARIS BURNING?) and Charles Millot (THE BATTLE OF NERETVA) are Labiche’s resistance sidekicks, both passionate in their rather minor roles. Jeanne Moreau (THE VICTORS) makes a pretty big impression as a hotel owner who gets caught up the fight and elects to help Labiche, even though it will hurt her business and put her life in danger.

In support, the cast is made up of some very fine young actors who would become mainstream faces in later European war movies. Wolfgang Preiss (THE LONGEST DAY) makes an impression as the German Major commanding a rail yard, who is just simply trying to keep his facility running well and doesn’t want to deal with Von Waldheim. The great Richard Munch (PATTON) has one strong scene as a German general, who knows the front line battle is more important than Von Waldheim’s art. Howard Vernon (FROM HELL TO VICTORY) is the German captain with glasses in charge of the train; Donald O’Brien (DEADLY MISSION) is a very mean-looking Sergeant keeping Lancaster and Remy in check; and Arthur Brauss plays the German Captain interrogating the stationmaster.

The second essential portion of the story goes to the purely technical side of the production. First of all, there are some truly spectacular action sequences. Most of them were done with real locomotives, on life-size sets with authentic explosions. One huge, three-way head-on-collision is awe-striking and must have marvelous to see on the big screen. Lancaster performs all of his own stunts; jumping from control towers, running and catching moving trains – all, one would think, would be difficult for a man of 51 – but Lancaster doesn’t show a bit of strain. A good deal of the action centers around simply moving trains and equipment through railyards, and it’s all portrayed with acute attention to authenticity and detail.

At key moments, Frankenheimer uses his typical unorthodox filming technique to give the action a new perspective. The camera zooms in on every day objects, which actually have key importance at that one moment. He follows Labiche down a hallway with a handheld camera simply because it’s the best way of showing how he gets to where he’s going. All of this is trademark Frankenheimer direction, and it gives the film a sharp, cutting edge to its already awesome plot. Sincerely, standard direction with all of the same elements would really lessen the impact of the punch every other element packs.

A few side notes: the scenery is great; each town, village set piece, actual location or open countryside looks just like 1944 France. Maurice Jarre’s rousing music score is great and is quickly becoming one of my favorite war movie themes, ranking with the works of Jerry Goldsmith, Ennio Morricone, Elmer Bernstein and John Williams.

I saw this movie on Turner Classic Movies, letterboxed about 1.66:1. This is apparently a transfer directly from the DVD. The print is excellent: the black and white image is sharp, the sound is clear and appropriately loud; and there is hardly a scratch or speckle to be seen. The DVD is probably worth buying for the commentary track it holds, but I have not yet viewed the disc.

THE TRAIN is an instant classic from the Golden Age of cinema, with every element working perfectly.

Marcus is a successful advertising executive who woos and beds women almost at will. After a company merger, he finds that his new boss, the ravishing Jacqueline, is treating him in exactly the same way. Completely traumatized by this, his work goes badly downhill. But then Jacqueline’s more quietly attractive assistant, Angela, who has been dating Marcus’ best friend, shows herself more than a little concerned by his parlous state.

Boomerang Movie Review

A pretty good movie overall

Typically I don't like Eddie Murphy since his range is so limited and his humor wasn't funny in 1980 and hasn't changed much since then however….

he breaks that mold and does a pretty decent job. He pulls off suave without being smarmy and except for the middle part of the script where he fails to see he's being played it works.

It doesn't hurt that the movie has some gorgeous ladies (Halle, Robin Givens, Grace Jones). As a player Eddie shows some great style as not seen since the Tao of Steve.

An underrated movie and worth the time to watch.

H.G. Well’s classic novel is brought to life is this tale of alien invasion. The residents of a small town in California are excited when a flaming meteor lands in the hills. Their joy is tempered somewhat when they discover that it has passengers who are not very friendly. The movie itself is understood better when you consider that it was made at the height of the Cold War–just replace Martian with Russian….

The War of the Worlds Movie Review

One word: CLASSIC!

George Pal redeems himself after the appalling special effects from "When Worlds Collide" by giving us one of the best science fiction movies from the 1950′s. Without the use of Industrial Light & Magic or THX, George Pal created the near-perfect illusion of flying swan-like Martian machines attacking the Earth. (Near-perfect because you can faintly see the wires) Ann Robinson gives a BRILLIANT performance as "The damsel in distress". Sandro Giglio (from "When Worlds Collide") returns as one of the scientists. Also Leith Stevens returns from "When Worlds Collide" to provide the music. You’ll notice too that some of the footage from this movie comes from "When Worlds Collide". I must add…look for George Pal & Byron Haskins as the hobos listening to the radio.

An unsuccessful over-the-top actress becomes a successful over-the-top authoress in this biography of Jacqueline Susann, the famed writer of “The Valley Of The Dolls” and other trashy novels. Facing a failing career, Susann meets a successful promoter who becomes her husband. After several failures to place her in commercials and a TV quiz show, he hits upon the idea for her to become a writer. In the pre-60′s, her books were looked upon as trash and non-printable. But then the sexual revolution hit and an audience was born for her books. The story shows the hidden behind the scenes story of Susan’s life, including her autistic son and her continuing bout with cancer that she hid up to her death.

Isn’t She Great Movie Review

Bad film with a suicidal title…

A good way to gauge the end results of this film disaster would be to temporarily resurrect the personage of Jacqueline Susann to get her reaction. I think she would have laughed it off the screen, but not amused laughter: aching, bitter, cynical laughter. I don’t see it as a camp film ("Valley of the Dolls" was a camp film); this is a pure, unadulterated error in judgment by many talented people with honorable intentions. The picture looks good and has the nice addition of Burt Bacharach’s music score (with the occasional Dionne Warwick vocal–natch), but it is unbearably miscast. When was the last time you can remember Bette Midler failing to ignite on screen (her TV sitcom not accepted)? Bette strains for a low-key effect in the serious moments, but it’s just not in her to be pensive; her raucous scenes also derail, and this is due in part to poor direction, poor editing choices, and also poor judgment from Midler, who lets herself be seen on-camera struggling (a struggling comedienne is about as funny as a drowning one–here she does both). A sequence in the film that has hubby-to-be Irving Mansfield following Jackie into a NYC lake is both outrageous and deadening. The factually-incorrect script aside, "Isn’t She Great" (no question mark?) is quite simply a beleaguered movie: vapid, colorless, unfocused, and out-of-touch. Susann might’ve asked what her ‘cut’ was and then forgot the entire thing. *1/2 from ****
